In this series, we review a range of common questions we receive regarding when it is appropriate to register for an ABN. With more and more people joining the share economy to earn additional income, find out if you need an ABN for food delivery companies such as Deliveroo or Uber Eats.

Do I need an ABN for Deliveroo?

If you are a Deliveroo rider partner, or considering signing up to be one, you need to know what your tax obligations are to avoid any trouble with the Australian Tax Office (ATO). At present a rider partner is considered an independent contractor, and will need to sign up for an Australian Business Number (ABN). Applying for an ABN is easy through LawPath’s ABN Registration Service. Complete your application in five minutes and receive your ABN within 24 hours.

As a rider partner you are a contractor running a business. This on the basis that you are:

  • Providing commercial services;
  • With the intention to profit from these services;
  • Offering these services on a regular basis; and
  • Engaged in business activities such as making deliveries for the reasons stated above.

GST Registration for Deliveroo Rider Partners

If you only deliver food and you earn less than $75,000, you do not have to register for GST (but you must have an ABN). You only need to register for GST as a Deliveroo rider-partner if you earn more than $75,000 per year. This is different from the GST rules that apply to Uber and other rideshare drivers, as the tax threshold works differently for people delivering food.
